Spotlight on Newport,
a spectacular city-by-the-sea
Perhaps nowhere else
in the country is the 'good life' more evident than
in Newport, RI, the summer location of choice for
New York's industrial barons of the 19th century.
Newport still is a destination of quintessential
New England beauty, the heart of the state's sailing
and maritime industries, and a cultural center that
attracts both sportsmen and artists alike from around
the globe.
The breathtaking mansion
estates of American captains of industry like Cornelius
Vanderbilt's The Breakers, today are open to the
public, but the best known collection of summer
home museums in the world is not the only reason
to visit quaint Newport.
Newport has become synonymous with haute culture,
and events here run from early spring right through
the Christmas holiday season. Host of the annual
Newport Jazz Festival (since 1954), it also is home
to the Newport Music Festival each summer and the
Newport Waterfront Irish Festival held each Labor
Day. In the early fall, visitors are treated to
a fantastic gastronomical indulgence, A Taste of
Rhode Island, when 40 of the state's best restaurants
offer appetizer portions of their finest meals.
Each fall Newport also hosts the Newport International
Boat Show.
Take a 3.5 mile seaside
stroll along the Cliff Walk for spectacular views
of the high rocky coastline and some of the great
old Victorian mansions for which the town is famous.
Choose from a multitude of fine restaurants between
shopping excursions and don't miss the Newport Vineyards
- a local award-winning winery open daily for tours
and tastings. Visit the International Tennis Hall
of Fame Museum, or the Museum of Yachting, which
is home to two-time America's Cup winner Courageous.
Hearty souls may even choose to charter a crewed
day trip on one of three America's Cup Regatta yachts
docked right downtown.
Regardless of the
season, the magic of Newport's beauty, culture and
history offers something for everyone…and just 20
minutes from The Villages on Mount Hope Bay. |
